Hey Dave,

Cute Dog! I have 4 dogs and took so many dog training classes so I might be of some help.

First off you should of crate trained your dog from the beginning this teaches your dog to told it and not eliminate in their sleeping areas and inside the house. I would still recommend trying this. If your dog whines alot like ours, you should ignore him. I actualy had to put the crate in the closet but he seemed to like it in there and now he is completly trained and doesn't even need his crate.
He was very whiny at first but he got used to his place and likes it now. The crate should be just big enough for him to turn around ok and that is it and no food or water in the crate. You can put some toys and a blanket in there.

Then when you wake up let him out get really excited and say wanna go pottie, take your dog outside with treats wait for him to go the bathroom and prasie him "good potty" and give him some treats. When you say "good potty" be excited.

If you dog goes inside clean up the poop and take it into the yard where he is supossed to go and leave it there. This will help him realise that he should go into the yard. If he goes anymore praise him and and give him more treats. You can also buy a anti-potty spray and spray it where ever he messes, otherwise it will smell and he will think it is ok to go there. I have heard several different good and bad things about rubbing their nose in it. I have heard it may make them ashamed of it and then they will try to go inside and hide before going so be careful with doing that.
You also need to watch him alot and catch him going in your house as much as possible. They say you have to catch him within 3 seconds or the dog will not know what he did wrong. So if you don't catch him quick there is no sense punishing him but you should still take any poop outside into the yard. When you catch him tell him no but try not to yell, just take him, his poop and treats into the yard. It is useless to spank him. If he pee's clean it up right away and also take him in the yard.
