The most successful way I've done is crate training, and no dog is too old to learn to use a crate.
Get a kennel that is big enough for your dog to turn around in, but not much more. He will do anything to avoid pooping in such a small space.
Make sure he's in the crate all night. When he whines to get out, open the door, pick him up in your arms immediately, and take him outside.
Put him on the ground and make a big positive deal out of things if he poops or pees outside.
Then, when you go inside, let him stay out for awhile, but keep a close eye on him. If he looks like he's going to go, or starts to go inside, pick him up immediately and say "NO... " in your best low deep bad voice... and take him outside. Make a big deal out of how great he's doing if he does anything outside like he should.
It takes a LOT of patience. You're going to have to watch him like a hawk. When he isn't crated, he's going to find somewhere to go eventually.
If you keep at it, and you are CONSISTANT, he will learn. You have to be consistant.
The key to training dogs is catching them in the act. It doesn't do you any good to yell at them after they've pooped somewhere and been running around for awhile. They don't know what you're mad about. Only get mad and say "NO" if you actually catch him in the middle of taking a dump.
