Hey Charly,
Much of the publics perseption of "assault weapons" lies along the same lines as yours.
I don't know the exact statistics on "friendly fire" but I do have some statistics that relate to self-defense.
Firearms in private hands are used 2.5 million times each year to prevent crime, or 6,849 times per day. That includes rape, aggrevated assault, and kidnapping. Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal?s) is shed.
It's a big myth that you are more likely to be injured or killed using a gun for self defense.
In fact, you are far more likely to survive a violent assault if you defend yourself with a gun.
6% of all people who resist with a gun get hurt.
25% of all people are hurt if they do nothing at all.
40% of all people are hurt if they resist with a knife.
45% of all people are hurt if they resist in a non-violent manner.
Of course, I have all sources for these statistics upon request.
