For an international perspective, it's important to remember that one of the world's most expert rescue teams (specializing in urban catalcysmic circumstances, such as this) -- one that rescued people after earthquakes, fires, and explosions in many, many countries -- ALL died on 9/11/01. They took with them a cumulative 220 years of rescue experience.
Someone going down the WTC north tower stairs encountered them walking UP them. The rescue team told the crowd to keep moving and to turn AWAY from Liberty Street, or they'd get in the way of the debris fall (this saved everyone who listened to them, btw). One of the people walking down asked them how THEY were going to get down from the building. The team captain looked at him and said, "We're not."
That's courage.
