For example on a M4 you couldn't have a folding stock and a short barrel (think it had to be atleast 12 inches) But you could have one or the other.

However if you wanted to bypass the whole law all you had to do was locate a lowe reciver which was dated pre ban and you could do almost what you wanted just not have it auto..

for example this is just on company of many tyou can legaly buy these kinds of firearms from.. ban or no ban http://www.armalite.com/sales/catalog/rifles.htm
The ban really does mean shit. Well, for gunowners who had "assault rifles" before the ban, well they made some good money. The cost of a pre-ban weapon today is considerably more than a post-ban "assault rifle."

The main thing the assault weapons ban did was this - prevent the "assault rifle" from having a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds and have a collapsible stock. There are more details to this, but they really aren't relevant.

Either way, you can still buy an "assault rifle" today if you dont mind spending $1000+ on the gun. These guns are referred to as "pre-ban."

The assault weapons ban was another one of those laws which really doesn't do a whole lot either way. Its enough to piss off gun owners, but at the same time it made some of them a lot of money.
