 I won't pretend to completely defend the use of nuclear weapons, especially against civilians. It is NOT one of this country's bright and shining moments. 
They should have used them against military targets, if at all. On the other hand, I understand the rationale. They wanted Japan to surrender quickly to avoid additional US casualties. 
It was a VERY unfortunate episode and I do feel that we should compensate Japan more for what happened.
