That 1000 will be a drop in the bucket compared to the coming years.
250,000 times the amount of radioactive material as was released at hiroshima is currently swirling in dust clouds over the sands of iraq. Birth defects went from 11 per 1000 in 1989, to 116(!) per 1000 in 2001. Radioactivity will have certainly increased by then, thanks to bunker busters and other DU and NDU weaponry.
... and there's 130,000 or so of your relatives, friends and neighbors living in that radioactive dust bowl today. Some of them for over a year. I suspect a lot more than 1000 are dead. They just don't know it yet... but they will, and probably pretty soon.
Exercise for the audience: What happens when you need new people to replace all the ones dropping like flies due to cancer and other "Gulf War Syndrome Redux" symptoms?
