Christians and Muslims have long held the belief that lending money and charging interest was wrong. The Jews disagreed. Lending money for profit was considered a dirty business. This is where all the stereotypes about jews being greedy misers stem from.
I'm pretty sure that Muslim banks (or at least the majority of them) even to this day do not pay or charge interest.
