That is an assault and there is no excuse for that - don't matter a lot what his story is.
"Capture" any evidence now... by either reporting to the police or by going to a hospital. (May be you have time to consider things by using the hospital route - but don't know what this means re the law).

She is trying to sleep it off now. She's already had a shitty week with the family being stuck in the hurricane, me being away, and now a shithead hits her on her birthday night.
Splendid fucking birthday. We will see how she feels when she gets up, and then go from there. She told me it is bruised, and her stomach hurts from the punch...
I will definitely throw myself into this, and convince her to file charges for battery/assault and have him deal with the cops. Maybe it will even appear on his file, that'd be nice for future employers of his.
