Let me hit the nail on the head for you...
Many people have made a lot of money acting in a "board persona" - I'm sure you can name a few, past and present if you follow the boards at all.
The thing is, they didn't turn around one day and say "Uh, okay guys. I'm really honest and this is all bullshit I promise. Come do business with me and we can be friends!" (paraphrased, I know you didn't say that).
It's that turnaround that makes people nervous.
People who call a spade a spade are okay - you know where you stand with them.
