Then your friend was not buried in the traditional Jewish manner. When a Jewish person dies, they are not left alone until they are buried. Traditionally burial takes place within 24 hours of death (they are NOT embalmed). 48 hours is allowed if there are relatives etc. that live far away and need the time to get there..or if it is the Sabbath. After the funeral (they are not allowed to be displayed during the funeral) Shiva takes place which is a 7 day mourning period.
