What does it matter if they're going to be cleaned anyway? It's the same reason I wouldn't take my plate into the toilet and curl a winding lincoln log onto to appreciate it's beauty before tipping it into the bowl - what's the fucking point? theres a small chance that your dishwashing skills won't be thourough enough to clean the plates properly, the same goes for a dishwashing machine which sometimes aren't as effective as they should be.
I bet you don't flush your head in the toilet just because you can jump in the shower afterwards.

Seriously though -- judging from the quotations presented, those new studies might not take into account advances in medical care, etc. It's like people who claim cars and roads are safer now than they were 20 years ago, or that murders are decreasing when really -- just as many people are being seriously injured, but those accidents and attacks wind up not fatal because ER doctors are saving them due to medical advances.
