Here in Louisiana you can carry a pistol on your person almost anywhere as long as it's visible. I used to carry a 9mm on a hip holster (I thought it was cool for some stupid reason back then). I only see people doing this every blue moon now as most places have the little sign.
A business has to either put up a no weapons sign or personally come up to you and ask for you to remove the weapon from the place.
There are several types of buildings that are listed as being off limits to weapons (most are common sense), federal buildings, post office, hospitals, banks, any place that sells ammo, any place that sells booze, schools.
Here, your car is an extension of your home and you can carry a weapon anywhere in the vehicle (visible or not). However I learned that you should tell the police, if they pull you over, about the weapon the second they appear at the window.
They also offer concealed permits here but I've heard they are so hard to get that I've never bothered applying for one.
