Hey now.. some people happen to think South Florida is pretty nice... I don't live in Hollywood, but I do work there -- it's not so bad.
There's plenty to do here.. Hollywood is about 10 minutes south of Fort Lauderdale, and 25 minutes north of Miami.
If your wife wants shopping, there's plenty of it.. most tourists make their way out to Sawgrass Mills -- it's not the Mall of America, but it's ok.
As far as gambling goes -- yeah.. there are a couple tracks... but we also have a few casinos... some on Native American reservations, and a few more on cruise ships (they cruise out into international waters - sit there for a few hours while everyone gambles away - then come on back).
SeaEscape is pretty good.
The Diplomat is on the beach.. but I don't think you need to worry about sharks -- the media blew that WAY out of proportion. If you're still worried, just know that Broward County has one of the lowest rates of shark attacks in Florida.
Hey Slippery -- why didn't you tell everyone about Haulover Beach? Not that I would ever go there

, but Haulover is a PUBLIC clothing optional beach... just a few miles south of Hollywood.
And really... the heat isn't that bad -- you get use to it.... summer nights are awesome though -- can't beat midnight at 75 degrees
Phew... that wore me out -- just call me the welcome wagon.
