Take a look at the pic that MagicMike posted. See that big "3" on the instrument panel? That's the gear indicator.
I'm curious how you could have thought you did such an amazing feat in your friend's M3, but not talk about it afterwards with him. You'd think someone would have corrected you and said that you were in 3rd gear, rather than let you make yourself look stupid here.
