Bush heckler doesn't plan to appeal firing

By JOHN RABY
Associated Press Writer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A man who was fired after he heckled President Bush at a political rally in the Eastern Panhandle said Saturday he won't try to get his graphics design job back.

Glen Hiller was escorted from Hedgesville High School on Tuesday after disagreeing with the president's comments about the Iraq war and the search for weapons of mass destruction there. The crowd had easily drowned out Hiller with its chant: "Four more years.''

Hiller said he was told by his company he'd embarrassed and offended a client who provided tickets to the event.

"My beef was with the bigger story, the fact that you're showing up at an event, you don't do anything wrong and you get escorted out,'' said Hiller, of Berkeley Springs. "All I did was show up and voice my opinion.

"It's just bizarre that you disagree with them and it all turns evil.''

Hiller was told of his firing Wednesday when he arrived at Octavo Designs of Frederick, Md. He said the client was a public relations worker who represents the Berkeley County school district.

"I think I was more surprised than mad,'' he said. "I'm mad less about losing the job. I'm more mad about the reasons. It's a microcosm of everything's that wrong with the world.

"At an event where the president is showing up, it should be open to anyone who wants to enter. It's a completely scripted event. He surrounds himself with people who support him. Your opinion ... is viewed as right or wrong.''

A telephone message left with the company wasn't immediately returned Saturday.

Hiller, a 35-year-old father of two young girls, had worked at the firm for five months. He said he doesn't plan to appeal the firing and doesn't have a grudge against his boss.

"I don't mean her any harm. She's been a decent person,'' he said, adding, "To some degree I can see her point of view. Advertising is all about having the perfect tan and driving a cool car. It's all about image.''

Hiller said he now plans to pursue work as a registered nurse. He worked in that field for 10 years before getting the design job.

Hiller, who calls himself an independent voter, said he talked with Bush supporters after the incident.

"They said why they liked Bush and why they didn't like (Democrat John) Kerry. We had a nice decent conversation and we went our separate ways,'' Hiller said. "That's the way it should be.''

Last month, Charleston City Council apologized to two protesters arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts to the president's July 4 rally. The pair were taken from the event in restraints after revealing T-shirts with Bush's name crossed out on the front and the words "Love America, Hate Bush'' on the back. Trespassing charges were ultimately dismissed.

And if you want to know how come, look at the religious BS this president is USING:

Quote:

P-I Focus: Bush weds religion, politics to form world view
...
This research showed that the administration's public communications contained four characteristics simultaneously rooted in religious fundamentalism while offering political capital:

Simplistic, black-and-white conceptions of the political landscape, most notably good vs. evil and security vs. peril.

Calls for immediate action on administration policies as a necessary part of the nation's "calling" and "mission" against terrorism.

Declarations about the will of God for America and for the spread of U.S. conceptions of freedom and liberty.

Claims that dissent from the administration is unpatriotic and a threat to the nation and globe.

In combination, these characteristics have transformed Bush's "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists" policy to "Either you are with us, or you are against God." To the great misfortune of American democracy and the global public, such a view looks, sounds and feels remarkably similar to that of the terrorists it is fighting.
