Independence police organize their investigation of a fatal shooting at a house in the 600 block of North Ponca Drive this morning.
Police found an Independence man dead this morning after he was allegedly shot by his fiance's ex-husband.

Neighbors identified the victim as Pat Hughes, the man who lived across the street from them at 610 Ponca Drive in northeast Independence.

Andy Sawmiller said Jewel Miller, Hughes's fiance, was running to his house naked just before 8 a.m. screaming for help.

"She thought he (the ex-husband) was in the backyard," he said. "I was trying to get my kids away in case he came over here."

Sawmiller said his wife and mother helped Miller and let her use their phone.

Kathy Fenwick was at Sawmiller's house trying to comfort Miller after she heard about the shooting. Fenwick's daughter, Haley, is Miller's son's girlfriend.

"(Miller) is really upset," she said. "Now she's got to tell his family."

Fenwick and Sawmiller said Miller's ex-husband has been harassing her lately, causing her to call the police several times.

Kathy Fenwick, left, calls on a cellualr phone with her daughter Haley Fenwick beside her watching police investigate a shooting across the street outside Jewel Miller's house Thursday. Haley is the girl friend of Jewel Miller's son Curtis Miller. Neighbors said that Jewel Miller's fiance, Pat Hughes, is the man fatally shot Thursday.
"She even set up a camera outside," she said. "But no one would help her."

Police said they found the body on the north side of the house and are still investigating the case. They are holding a suspect, the man neighbors say is Miller's ex-husband, for questioning.

I am just greatful I had the opportunity to know him. He will be missed.
