I've had to do that on a few occasions. The best thing to do is to take a hammer and hit them in the head a few times to knock them unconsious, once you get that far, you're golden, the rest is a breeze. The only thing that I hate is waiting for them to wake back up.

I've done it 6 times already, every one was a success planting the chip. The only thing is that I'm still waiting for 5 of those cats to wake back up, they must be really tired or something.
