I could write a book about this as I recently tried out a number of new 17" LCD's and returned them all.
Sony X73B - Annoying shimmering dither problem. Bad contrast and color range. Gave it to my GF.
Samsung 172X - Returned it as it cannot produce a true white unless you turn the brightness waaaaay up. Not as sharp as other panels.
Samsung 173p - Returned it as it was too contrasty and so slow it ghosted during DVD viewing.
Viewsonic Pro 171b - Returned it as it has a problem with a green shift at anything but the highest color temperature setting. Not sharp.
My current GF is a manager at a big computer chain store so I can go in and try anything out for a day or two and return it. A lot of the new panels sacrifice colour and contrast to make up extra refresh speed. On almost all of them the contrast is so poor that someone with brown hair or black in an mpeg will look the same color.
The best panel I have seen and the one I use is the Mitsubishi nxm76LCD which I think is the same panel as the NEC LCD1760VM. It has great realistic contrast and sharpness and does not ghost in movies or games.
