Since it was boxed up with his other stuff that was cleaned out of the vacant house while he was in jail it sounds like he killed them for storing it for him.
The stories online don't mention that they also bludgened the household dog to death. I guess they figured the dog was in on the conspiracy to keep his property away from him. These animals should have been welded into cages long ago. They had no business walking amongst humans.
