There is still money to be made in the gaming industry outside of being a mainstream developer/publisher.
The graphics in games alone are just as much work now of days as big cg animated movies. A level used to consist of rooms with a few items and textures slapped on. Now literally every detail has to be modelled, textures don't cut it anymore. Just take a look at Doom3.
I suspect outsourcing this type of work is going to happen. Anyone can make a 3D model of a chair, not everyone can created a fluidly designed level.
If you want to make money in the game industry, I'd suggest starting up a company doing something like this.
