Get an SLR hands down. I have the Canon 10D (very similiar to the digital rebel) and I love it. The SLR simply has better optics and produces a better picture, plus you can upgrade lenses, flash, etc. later.
Buying a camera soley based on the pixel count is like buying a stereo only based on watts. You can get one with a high # that is really a piece of shit in the end.
