Well, in general, text based works better for search engines, thumbs at least need to have alt tags. On the subpages/category pages you should make sure to use a mod rewrite in case your script does create URLs with parameters (google hates "blah.php?cat=" and stuff like this). To the mainpage of each category, you could add category specific hardlink trades to boost link popularity which is essential for SE traffic. Recip(s) should be text based only, the text that links to you should contain the keywords for your site.

The big advantage is that you can put targetted ads/FHGs on every category page, maybe with some nice keyword rich text on top of it describing each sponsor site. It's like running several niche TGPs and a mainstream TGP in one site.
