Without getting into my views on the morals of the topic to answer your question it is my belief that it is not illegal, at least in the United States, to have stories that contain these topics. In fact most authors will argue their freedom of speach rights on this topic.
I am not sure on artwork/illustrations etc but I would think that would be more of a no but I do not know.
There are actually a number of instances of well known authors stories that contain (maybe not quite as graphically depicted as some stories found on the web) these types of topics in their works.
The argument I have been given mostly is "would it be right or allowable to film someone being murdered - no; but I can right a book about it - no problem".
This is not my personal opinion simply my view on the current legal situation.
