I would say that his speed was his main asset. He had the hand speed of a lightweight, yet the power of a normal heavy. That made for a lethal combo. Of course, speed is the first thing that leaves you as you get older; just look at Ali who was basically shot at 34. As for Tyson's defense being his main asset, I've never heard that one before. He did have terrific head movement in his early years, but he never blocked shots particularly well.
