Beijing, China, Jul. 28 (UPI) -- China's Ministry of Public Security has shut down
700 Web sites running pornographic content in less than a fortnight, according to local news reports.
State news agency Xinhua said Wednesday that 224 people had been detained for posting images and video considered lewd as well as text encouraging "pornographic activities online or organizing sex trade" since the crackdown began on July 16.
China Daily quoted Wu Mingshan, the public security official in charge of the campaign, as saying "a clean online environment" had been created in big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai plus provinces ranging from Guangdong in southern China to Liaoning in the northeast.
The ministry has received more than 700 phone calls and 16,000 online tips from the public responding to its phone hotlines and Web site for reporting porn sites.
Wu promised fraud and gambling were the next targets in China's war against online crime.
