I'm not very sure how you tell which version your PS2 is. If according to the main board design, mine is version 4. I believe now there is version 5. The wiring and curcuit board design are different.

You shouldn't buy the version 1. Just like the first version of PS1, there always are problems at the beginning. If you just bought it (probably not), return it to the store immediately and get a new one.

If you haven't buy any console yet, I will definitely recommend PS2. Xbox doesn't acturally show the claimed power with its current games (graphic resolution, speed, etc.). I believe the most important thing for a system is the software. PS2 now has the most game companies' support.

The Xbox is basically a PC. And it CAN crash just like windows 98 (this is astonishing to me too!). One advantage is Xbox will soon be hacked all over, from inside out. But due to many restrictions designed by MS, right now the only working hack is changing the cable between CPU and hard drive, which can increase the gaming speed. But we should see more hacks very soon.

For gamecube, sorry, never thought about it. No offense. If you are not a huge fan of Nintendo, you may not want it at all (I may even spelled the 'N' word wrong). IMHO, the only advantage of it is the price.
