Like Sharky said, you really need both. Charcoal has better taste, IMHO (and be sure to buy hardwood charcoal chunks, not the stuff in the grocery store), but with gas you can control the temperature better and if you just want to run out and grill a fast burger, it takes a LOT less time than starting the charcoal
The good news is that a good Weber charcoal grill is only about $70 so when you decide to break your charcoal cherry, it's pretty cheap
