The guy who brought it to Brazil and tought it to the Gracies was a student of Kano, the man who established Kodokan Judo, so what he tought to Carlos Gracie was actually Judo (still considered Jujitsu at the time)

Judo can be very effective, specially when you get to higher levels and get a grasp of your weight center, I can for example stand my ground against a guy that is 40 kg. heavier than me, of course it is true though that fighting a guy that is bigger and has the same skill level is not a fair fight
I was being facetious ;) Judo is a good art, but the fact that it emphasizes a pin rather than a submission is a serious handicap if you have to use it to protect yourself against a bigger guy. Best thing to do is learn some Judo takedowns and then add some BJJ submissions so you have a more complete package.
