.com will always rule, but I would think the value of a .us is in the eyes of the customers. There's a lot of uninformed people that might see .us sites as being strictly US sites and assume they are more trustworthy. Trust from your customers is a very nice thing to have coming out the gate.
Plus, there's still tons of one-word .us domains left. I picked up messy.us and catfights.us (along with a few others). I'm sure they won't make me rich, but certainly worth risking the $11.98 I spent on those two.
