Gangs believed behind deadly Edmonton wedding party
EDMONTON - Rival gangs attending two separate weddings in the same banquet hall were likely behind a brawl that resulted in the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man, police say.
Six other people were injured, including the groom, who was stabbed in the throat. Another man was in critical condition with head injuries.
Edmonton police said on Monday that two weddings were taking place Saturday night on separate floors at the downtown Mirama Dining Lounge, when ? for an as yet unknown reason ? a fight broke out at one of them.
However, police believe that members of rival gangs were involved in the knife fight.
Investigators said all seven injured were gang members, according to the Canadian Press.
Tap Cong Tran, who was related to the injured groom, was stabbed to death.
Police said after the stabbings, shots were fired from the parking lot at the building, but it remained unclear whether anyone was hit.
"At this point, we have no indication that the victim, or any of the victims, was hit by any gunfire," said a police spokesman.
There were about 500 guests at the two weddings
