My dad owns a salon and has been cutting hair for 20+ years. His cheapest cut is $40 for short hair and it only goes up from there, but he gets 20-25% tips AND his customers send us goodies for Christmas.
Since he's self-employed he relies on tips to make the bulk of his *real* income (the rest goes to overhead like rent, products, etc.), so he talks with every customer, gets to know them and their family, and makes them comfortable so they come back again and again. The kids at Supercuts don't know how to do this, they just got out of Beauty School and are trying to get you out of the chair without cutting your ears off.
