It's not a matter of "figuring out" metaphores to people who believe in the bible as being the literal word of God. If God said it, then it's true to these folks. The bible is filled with statements about the 4 corners of the earth, the ends of the earth, heaven being above the earth, etc. These statements *cannot* be true if the earth is spherical.
I'm sure you can go as far as to say that anything in the bible is a metaphore, including creation, God, the Garden of Eden, the 10 commandments, etc. But the folks who believe the bible to be the literal word of God do not believe that they are metaphores; they believe them to be facts straight from the mouth of God. And that was my point.
