You might want to check out
http://www.robgalbraith.com/ for ideas on how to present banner ads in message boards. Their approach is as follows:
Horizontal banner ads for the forum listings, topic listings, post message pages, and ads in the sidebar for posts.
I wouldn't put the ads directly in the posts.
This board also runs banner ads as well.
