Radio waves may stop speeders
by Staff posted Jul 14, 2004
A new invention that uses radio waves to disable vehicles is being considered by police forces in Britain and the U.S., and has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The device, bbc.com reports, is placed on the back of a police cruiser similar to an antenna, and sends intensely concentrated electrical beams behind the car to the vehicle that is being stopped. Since most vehicles built now use computers for things like fuel injection, they will stall when the radio waves scramble the car's computer.

The device, which was invented by Dr. David Giri, has a range of about 50 metres.

A problem being thought out for the device is how to avoid affecting innocent nearby vehicles. In addition, the zapper wouldn't affect older cars that didn't use onboard computers.
