Nice guys finish last because they have this weakness (that they think is a strength) called morals. Assholes have none, therefore with nothing to hold them back, and no conscious, they will -- despite what you see in epics and comic books -- always win.
They gain respect because losers with ethics and morals who want money and can't achieve it applaud them for doing what they cannot do.
