Tattoos in general over overplayed. Everyone and their dog has a tattoo these days, and everyone is soooo desperate to always show people their tattoos and to have other people notice their tattoos. Tattoos and attention whores go hand in hand. Hey everyone! Look at me! I have a tattoo! Aren't I just sooo special!
Thin line between attention and expression. It's a bit pretentious to generalize all people with tattoos as attention whores.

However I do agree somewhat. If anything, nowadays, I would say their is less emphasis on expression/meaning of the tattoo, and is more of a comestic "accessory" worn as a badge of rebellion amongst college students on campuses.

If I'm Irish and have a Irishmen on my leg, I feel it is justified. If I am Italian, and have an Italian flag on my leg, I feel the it is justified. If my mother died, and I have an RIP tattoo, I feel it is justified. But once you start embarking on the barbwire, & chinese words across the forehead - It just may (not always) linger into the category you speak of.
