The primary reason is the use of UDP rather than TCP for packet delivery. You can also use multicast which saves on b/w and congestion, hence a faster and cleaner delivery of content. Windows Media Server is the one place on the web where there is a clear advantage to using that platform.

In a nutshell, it gives you more efficient b/w usage, the ability to serve many more people at once and mutiple options for delivery besides just straight TCP and HTTP.
