Za Ha,

Sorry I did not see your question earlier, because you have been given some very inaccurate information. While I am not the telephone company, I did work for GTE (before it became Verizon)for 25 years, and have been in the industry for 30+ years.

In answer to your question, no, you will never have to pay for calling a 1-800, 1-877 or 1-888. These are toll free to the calling party prefixes. When you dial one of these numbers it is directed to the central office of the called party and then translated to the local 7-digit phone number of that person/business. Any applicable toll charges are applied to the owner of the 800, 877 or 888 number.

These numbers can be set up to only work from certain areas, such as it would make no sense for your neighbor to accept calls from his local area, since it is a free call for you to call him anyway. So if you called your neighbors 800 number, you mould most likely receive a recording saying that you could not call that number from your area. However, this recording would cost no one anything.

So, to answer your question, no, you will never be charged for calling any 800, 888, or 877 numbers.
