On the other hand look at a site like TheHun. He sells all the banner spots on the site plus the top 15 gallery spots. Can you imagine what kind of man power you'd need to build 15+ quality galleries everyday, each in a different niche, using different content, promoting a different program, and then trying to track the productivity and profitability of each page each day? It'd be a logistical nightmare, not to mention a risk.
Sure you might make more, but you might make less than you would just selling the spot for a flat rate. Same goes for the banner ads.
Plus, when your site is a "traffic pump" its hard to straddle the fence and try to do everything you can to get and keep bookmarkers on the one hand, while trying to make a buck off of them with the other hand. Its far easier to just focus on your strengths and let other people focus on theirs.
