best way to get around, by car. or plane, if you have money to waste and only want to hop from Vienna to Klagenfurt (Carinthia) and Salzburg.

trains are pretty useless in general, since they are fucking expensive and Carinthia doesn't have the best rail connection.

for hotels worldwide, i personally prefer http://www.hrs.de/
it's a Germany based service, choose you language in the left frame. i haven't booked a hotel without that servicein at least 3 years. they rock.
