I bought a Speed Reading book off Amazon. I read and did the accompanying excercises to the first 8 of 27 total Chapters. I'm a pretty efficient reader, but the techniques in those first chapters increased my top reading speed by 30-40%. Someday I'll go farther into it, and I have no doubt that it can continue to keep speeding me up. It's not easy, it takes practice just like anything else, but you can read a lot more in the end.
Another note, speed reading is a different style of reading altogether. Reading like you do now will still most likely be your default reading speed. And speed reading works best on very fluid information, and information with which you are familiar. If your reading something that you would normally struggle with, speed reading is not going to make it faster or easier.
I don't know if I answered your questions or not, but I would really suggest that everyone look into this. Information is our industry, and the way of the world. Finding ways to take in and interpret that information faster and more efficiently can't hurt.
