great contest...
I think this'll be a learning experience for a lot of designers here. most designers who entered the contest do all primarily adult designs... fortunately i have a stronger mainstream background than my adult background.
but one thing I learned when i started out, was when it comes to good mainstream design technique, it's best to stay away from the use of a lot of gradients, a lot of curves, shadows, etc etc... all of that stuff is great with adult design because the intent is to be glamourish, but mainstream design is more about textual content, therefore a design that isn't cluttered with a lot of 3d, bevels, shadows n' such everywhere, makes it easier for the visitor to visually access that content - and also makes the page load quicker.
so the difference between the mainstream surfer and the adult surfer is the fact that one wants to see some visual eye candy (hot babes n' what not), where the other (mainstream) wants to access the text content quickly without much distraction (ie bevels, flashy gfx, shadows, gradients, etc etc ultimately increasing load time).
there's always something new to learn when it comes to design, and i know i have a lot to learn myself. but for those of you that don't win, make note next time to try n' stay away from all of those bevels, shadows, gradients, etc etc and try to focus on clean design techniques.
fuckfind and several others have the right idea IMO.
