actually happens often in general aviation.
in certain parts of the country airports are in close proximity and have the same runway headings.
you descend out of the haze and you are on tower frequency and you see what you think is the right airport and you're talking to the controller and you instinctively head towards it without glancing at your gauges.
almost happened to me 20 years ago coming into long beach, luckily the controller caught it or i might have landed at a military base (this was in the days before GPS).
so it can, and does happen.
