As my above post .. You can only train out negative behaviour while it's occuring. If you come home, and your sofa is shredded, it's too late to punish the animal.
You can try a squirt bottle of water if you catch him in the act.
Get your dog a crate. That's the plastic shipping crates they sell at pet stores. Make it comfortable with a blanket or pad. Let your puppy go in and out himself, until he is comfortable with it. It won't take long before the puppy begins to see the crate as his own, safe place. Never "punish" the puppy in the crate. It's his safe place.
A properly trained dog will show no mind to being put in his crate when you go out. He'll happily curl up and sleep. Both of my Rottweilers love their crates and will go their on command. This will save you further furniture damage.
