Some things that would be deemed "obscene" in Buttfuck Alabama would not be deemed "obscene" in Los Angeles.
So... what I am saying is there is only one constant "illegal" in smut. Underage. Its federal and crosses all state lines. Anything else is left up to individual states blah blah blah.
The problem is with the definition of obscenity.
(a) whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,
(b) whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law, and
(c) whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."
That is pretty damn vague.
