Dont quote me on this but I remember something about getting a weakly sprung peg or similar [so as not to inflict pain] and using it to hold the dogs ears behind its head allowing air flow inside the canal. The longer you can keep the ears back the better off the dog will be.
Basically the combination of ears being flopped down all the time, a bit of dirt and the fact that cockers LOVE water; everything inside the ear canal gets festy and creates the smell.
