Germany was defeated by breaking the cardinal rule of war and fighting on several fronts at once... not because Russia did anything. If Russia was so awesome and powerful, why was St Petersburg blockaded for 3 years (over 900 days) with people starving to death and eating each other?
Russia lost 30-40-50 million people... that is only a victory to the mathematically challenged.

on a side note, if it comes to a matter of who should be honored for dying in a war, well I'd say EVERYONE that was on the right side, and even those that were coerced into fighting for the wrong side...they were also victims in that madness...
we can argue about who gets more brownie points or we can realize that war is nasty no matter what.... and that to say one side is more worthy of praise than the other is just plain ignorant and childish....
