Keep in mind you burn calories sleeping, working, cleaning, hell even breathing.
What I did is found a site that helped me calculate how many calories I burned during a normal day with no additional exercise. (I will try to find the URL and post it later). I added up the hours I sleep, work, etc. (you get the idea).
From there I added up what I ate on a normal basis. Then found exercises to burn the excess and then some.
500 calories is a lot. Depending on your current weight you would need to bust your ass on the tread mill for a good 5 miles at a decent speed. I would suggest multiple exercises throughout the day to burn the additional calories. Walk instead of taking the car to the store or work etc. Then add in some other exercises or whatever you are into.
