back in my days living in Venice Beach we used to watch the helicopters swoop down over "ghost town."
This was late 80's back during the initial rise of the street gangs.
There was one apartment complex so bad that cops were afraid to drive by it...gang bangers would just point out windows and shoot at them as they drove by and they could never figure out where it was coming from...so they had to hire the Fruit of Islam *the security division of the Nation of Islam* to come and patrol it for them.
